Shifter bushings

Beitragvon Racing » 14. Jan 2007, 21:27

For those so inclined...
Making a set of these makes for an EXTREME difference in shifter feel.
It´s not even on the same map as the original anymore.

Bild

The ones at the bottom of the stick.Original are out of vulcanized rubber, and they´re ALWAYS shot. These two alone will make for a completely different stick.
Measures 15 outer,8,2 wide and 6mm through hole.

Bild
Bushings for the shifter arms on the gearbox.
Flange is 30mm in dia,thickness is 2mm
Bushing part is 25mm diameter and protrudes 3.5mm into the hardened steel arm of the box.
The hole in the middle is 10mm flat-which is the dimension of the shifter rod.

Bild

Bushings for the arms at the bottom of the shifter assembly.
These have a 25mm flange on the similar 2mm width.
Protruding part is 15 flat and they run 3mm into the arm itself.
Through hole again is 10mm-due to the dimension of the shifter rod.

The ones at the bottom of the stick.Original are out of vulcanized rubber, and they´re ALWAYS shot. These two alone will make for a completely different stick.
Measures 15 outer,8,2 wide and 6mm through hole.

Achtung, Korrektur!
Bitte beachten, was Jesper am 02.03. (weiter unten im thread) schrieb:

15mm is wrong.It´s a typo on my behalf.Sorry man.
Measurments i´ve taken have all been around the 18,45mm mark.
Now,the thing is that the bores of the stick are anything but NASA spec, and you basicaly get away with anything between 18,4 and 18,55mm.Variations in manufacture i guess.

Jesper,

again: Thanx a million.
Obviously noone here knows the value of these information, so everyone thinks "hä?". I'll try to bring some light into the German community.

Was tun?

Florian,

prima Idee, vielen Dank!

Sure.
1/Don´t even bother making a NC version. The bushings are done in no time in a lathe, and if a given number is up...just tell me.
What we´ll do is ask a friend of mine,Peter,to stand at the lathe(drehbank) and turn them out.
No problem what so ever,as long as we´re not talking by the hundreds.

The ones that make for the most difference in shifter feel is the No"14"s.
Buying a rod/staf of "lagerbrons" to turn a number of them out in the lathe at the shop is a breeze.

As for the bushing at the shifter rods et al...we´ll..let´s say that would turn in more hard core.
The No14s however is something i´d recommend even for a complete stocker.

Christian.
if you want to elongate the shifter arms per se,be advised that these are hardened.Ie;you do NOT simply just cut them up and put any piece of metal in there...
To do that job right you;
1/Need a high grade steel plate.
2/TIG weld it.

Jesper,

thanx for your offer!
If we can get No. 14s for cheap and quick - we'll take them of course!

Concerning the elongation of the shifter arms... I have a 4 gears shifter assembly here, that I wanted to cannibalize, i.e. cut some pieces out of the arms and weld it into the arms for the 16V... That should work, I suppose.

Welding... hm... I'm a noob
So I'll have to ask someone to help me.

cheers,
Christian

Btw.
To install these bushing you need to be able to get underneath the car.
You start out by taking the shaltheber knopf off.
This is done by releasing the leather cover around the edges, and then releasing the contra nut at the bottom of the "knopf".

In doing so you´ll see the base of the shifter assembly within the car.
This is held in place by 4 M6 bolts(No10 socket in a 1/4" ratchet works great)
You unbolt these 4 bolts, and then take the backup light switch out of its socket at the base of the shifter assy.

Now..you get underneath the car.
At the shifter assy end of the whole deal you losen/dismantle the 3 clips keeping the shifter rods in place at the shifter assembly.
Knock the rods off of the shifter arms and let hand lose.

Again get into the car.
Now...you lift the shifter assy while turning it 90deg to the side as you pull it out.

Simple enough, and you should now have the entire assy in you hands.

Take it through some sort of cleaning....and clean it out well.

Have a spray can of white lithium grease at hand.

You start by turning the shifter assy upside down in a vise.
You´ll notice a sort of shifter gate(for 1st and reverse lockout) held by two contersunk either "insex(allen in english) bolts OR two torx.
Mark the relative position of the opening of the gate so you put it back the same way you took it off.

Now release the two very short M6 bolts at the shifter short side-at the plastic cover end.Take care of the spring within.

Having done this it´s time to attack the clamp at the main shifter axle.
This is again held in place by either insex or torx bolts.
As you losen these take them all the way out.
Snap ONE of the two circlips off that hold the main 6mm axle in place, and press said axle through the main axle out of the assy.

The main axle can now be released, but make sure you take care of the shim/washer at one end of the axle-which is there as sort of a bearing surface for the steel to ride upon-against the plastic end.

Now attack the small "E" clips that keeps the two nylon bushing in place at the stick-which is also the main lockout for the rear gear and 1st.

This will leave you with the aluminium "yoke" of the shifter to be able to press the old vulcanized bushings out of there and install the bearing bronze ones.
DO NOT USE A HAMMER OR EXTREME FORCE as the yoke is of cast aluminium!!!!!
Press them or TAP them out of the yoke with a punch in a vise.

Install the new ones as Christian writes-with a DROP of full hardening loctite for each bushing, and as the loctite hardens...commence reassembly.
In doing so you´ll be able to tap the bushings REAL close to the main axle and get the shifter as tight as it possible can ever be....

Install..apart from that is the reverse of taking it apart.

Wie lang hast du dafür gebraucht?

Lets agree on this then.
Der Maki is bound for "goeteborg" february 5th.
We´ll set end date for the first of february.
Everyone that wants in on the deal writes here BEFORE the 1st of february.
That leaves me with a couple of days to turn the bushings needed.

If anyone wants OTHER bushings than the No14,this needs to be told as well.
