No, I didn't :oops:
From what I can feel all seems to be OK with the new differential. No abnormal clearance and the locking discs are locking as normal for a differential that have been in use.

Hello Hello

I'm Max from the eastern part of Germany.

your one of the biggest reasons why to get registrated at the forum.

I am more in the Diesel scene wich is also verry common in the scandinavian car culture but love the way you build the engine!
The swap to the 210mm asd diff is my next step in rebuildung my whole rear end. I'll use some lasercut Sheet metal and welding work to get the Plate done.

What driveshafts and stuff you want to use? e34 m5 Shafts and Hubs are an option but MB parts and custom shafts are more interisting for me.
Do you lock the Diff with a Handpump?


Where you get the high stall converter from? :) a friend of mine is interested in the topic. he got no contact person and the turbobandit converters are pretty expensive :D

I'm using driveshafts from W220 S430, shorted them by around 67.5mm (according to my notes). And welded back together using TIG and a really deep V-joint. The outer wheel hubs are from W124 and machined in a lathe machine to fit with the wheel bearing/depth of W201. I made some small notes about the work but unfortunately no photos. My brain is also about to run out of memory so I'm lucky to have the notes anyway :super

I don't have a high stall converter yet but I have ordered it from a company that will make the similar build that TB is doing. Basically it will be to join 2 different size of converters together using a laser/water cut piece of metal. On top of that the converter also have to be modified so that the smaller converter can handle the 3 clutch discs that builds up the lock-function in the converter. This is one job that I decided not to do myself so I will end-up paying about same price as TB is asking for the converter. My only concern is if the converter will have a high enough stall for my purpose. If they get 4000rpm on a 3liter 6 cylinder engine I should get less due to the lack of torque a lower rpm. So I cross my finger that it will be able to get the turbo to start spooling.

So far the car have been working well. I hope that the new gearbox we are planing to test will make the car even faster on the 1/4 mile. Time will tell, hopefully we know next summer :schalt

Did you thought about compressed air e.g. from your climate compressor to spool the turbine wheel up and create boost pressure where your exhaust gasses are enabled to spool the turbine?

Max R.(the friend with interest in the high stall converter) thought about that too...Volvo used that in some models ...it is common in the off-road scene as well

Did you already some runs with the welded shafts?
I'll try to get my hands on some billet custom ones (my personal favorite is a weldfree shaft :) )

Hi Max,

No, never thought about that kind of system. Have been thinking about super charger or NOS in order to spool the turbo earlier. But decided that it's not worth the effort in my case.

I had several runs with the welded shafts. Have been using them for the last two years since the original once broke a few times. Correct and best is of course custom made ones but so far these ones have been working fine.

Do you have any link to your build?

I'm still building the car and have still much to do.
nothing special but if you are interisted you can follow the build (the stage 1 for 2019 is a bit soft but a matter of money...2020 i'll give much more boost and diesel)

Sorry for being so quiet. It's basically because I don't have to much interesting things to show and progress is over all slow. Have been adjusting the valve clearance and other small jobs but nothing besides that. Received my rebuilt converter last week and are now about to assemble that. Will be interesting to see how the characteristic of the car will change especially when it comes to the launch of the car from standing still. I'm worried that brake stall speed might still be to low with this converter. Some pictures of customs made converter to follow:

Ok, I will just go an with small updates as they pass by. If one person appreciate it, that will be enough :super

Previous pictures shows a torque converter it's used for automatic transmissions (instead of a clutch). They normally lock the crankshaft to the transmission at around 1000rpm and above. The new ones is designed to lock at around 4000rpm and above, hopefully that will be enough so that I can start from standing still with some turbo boost (by pressing the brake, give full throttle, release brakes when boost have been built).

Idea is to use it together with this automatic transmission 722.6xx from a later Mercedes.

Also found some pictures from when we made the camshaft gears adjustable.
Everything becomes more interesting when you get the camshafts in correct position. Really makes a big difference in combination with aftermarket camshafts.

Your thread hast over 7.000 views so obvously some people give it attention, but not everyone wants to spam with "I like your photos".
Maybe, in about 10 - 20 years, we get a modern board which allows to "like" a post etc. so you could easily see, that people like your posts.

Ok, so this time the update is not that exiting. It's more of an incite in the every day life with the car (dirty and in need of love). When testing full throttle shifts from 1st to 2nd gear we accidentally engaged the launch control and got some nasty explosion. So my intake ended up like balloon and the internal supports broke loose. So now I'm up for some small welding work again. While we had it disassemble I decided to send the injector for cleaning/flow test as well. I have also started to make a new generator support so that we can fit a bigger generator to the car. But forgot to take pictures of that. Hopefully we will be back on the roads soon again :schalt

Manifold is repaired and engine is running again. So I thought is was time to take care of and avoid a future problem by upgrading the alternator. New plate was fabricated and a new 140amp generator was installed. Now we are only waiting for the new drive belt. Hopefully it will arrive within a few days :)

What's the reason for 140 AMP? We never changed that...
Just to recharge battery faster because you're often starting the engine without having longer runtimes in between? ;-)

Hi Nagilum,

The bracket for the old one was falling apart/cracking so I had to change it anyway. Therefore I choose a larger one to be on the safe side. I have many electrical consumers in the car. Double fuel pumps (2x15amp), Cooling fan radiator (50amp if I remember correct), cooling fan transmission oil (10amp) and all standard consumers in the ignition system. Since the car is mostly used for drag racing and not highway cruising the cooling fans are active for long times and I'm today charging the car after every use. I just hope that the belt will be able to handle the resistance without slipping when the alternator is trying to deliver full power :super
