2.5 -16V limited slip differential

Hello members!

I'm looking for days on the internet but I can't find the proper answer. My Mercedes 2.5 16v seems to have a ASD limited slip differential. The ASD relay and wiring loom has been removed by the precious owner(s) so the electric valve is nog working. This should mean the differential should work as a normal 25% LSD. Am I correct?

Now, last I was testing the differential. When I spin one of the rear wheels (car in neutral) The opposite rear wheel spins the other way Like an open diff. Not quite what I was expecting from a LSD... To be shure I raised the back end, started the engine and let it roll in 1st gear (back wheels in the air). Both rear wheels spin. With a bit of force I was able to block either rear wheel with my bare hands...

When I'm driving in wet conditions I get the impression the diff ectualy transfers torque...

Is this normal? Is the diff completely worn?

I think, someone installed an "open Diff "as you called it.

With a LSD Diff, you can't move the other wheel so easily.... Both wheels should turn in same direction.
You need more force to stop one wheel with your hand.

If you look in the other actual thread about this turbo conversion in Finland, you will find a picture of a Diff without the backcover.
There you can see the friction discs of the ASD or LSD.

To find out if the discs are worn or if it's a open Diff, you have to take a look behind the backcover or maybe try to look with an endoskope (borescope) through the oil inlet.

There are actualy two oil lines connected to the differential. So I'm sure it's ASD. Without the controlrelay, will it act like any other LSD?

Due to space reasons etc. we removed the whole ASD stuff and left the diff 'as is'.
I had to change it because the old one grinded itself (it was louder than the exhaust) and I have another used ASD diff in use now.
Since both probably have >100k km done, there's nothing left that could block anything, that's why they behave like open diffs.

I've heard the disks "Reibscheiben" last 30, maybe 50.000 km until they are dead, but can only proove: never had one (3 by now) that worked like they should have when new.
For money reasons I didn't change to a fixed one - conversions are rather pricy.

Okay, thats what I expeted. Are those discs really that expensive? Are they still available?

Affordable; the bigger problem is to find someone who's able to reassemble them properly.
Some of us tried some people... some never finished work, others were badly made and became loud rather quick again... I never heard of any awesome refurbished diff.

Hi,

There is a company in the UK that has done a few of these now.

They charge from approx 380.00 pounds + Tax, subject to what parts are
needed and the condition of the CW/p etc.

The problem is that the ASD diff is not really up to it, the
early LSD [2.3 16v] is a bit better, and if its for just road
use then you could look to aftermarket internals etc.

Yesterday I found an old asd Diff with badly worn discs inside.
If you turn it around, there is no friction /resistance between left and right half shafts anymore.
So it's an open Diff now.....

Someday..... Maybe when I'm old and grey, I will start a DIY Repair... But at this moment, I still have enough Diffs to kill!
