Hallo Allen

Despite living in Belgium, my German is not that great. I can read, but writing is very hard to do right.

The story

I've owned my 2.5 - 16 for about 5 years now. I have been studying an awfull lot about the KE jetronic and managed to get the hang of it. Unfortunetely it is a lot harder to get informations about the EZL ecu (Anlage). I've been reading and searching a lot trying to find answers. Let my explain my problem:

A few weeks ago I bought the EZL Anlage which came from a 2.3 -16 ECE engine in a hury. It came quite cheap and it seemed like a good idea to have one in spare. No money wasted.

My W201 is a 2.5 - 16 m102.990 KAT. Kat is removed, lambda is working fine. When I was looking into the numbers on both EZL's I noticed the EZL which is installed into my car has a non matching number. My EZL anlage is Siemens nr. 0085459432. Not the one you would expect on the 2.5 - 16. On internet I red this one is installed in a m102 2.3 8v...

My w201 is working fine and producing 196ps on the dyno! Never noticed any lack of power or malfunctions.

Now, I would like to run the engine with the 2.3 - 16 ECE EZL Anlage. But I'm not sure if that's the safest thing to do.

Questions

- As far as I can imagine the 2.3 EZL does not retard the ignition during running warm since the ECE did not have lambda or kat?
- The m102.990 has longer stroke then the m102.983. This means higher piston travel in m102.990 and thus more advance?
- What's the difference between a both EZL modules for these engines?
- It is safe to run my m102.990 KAT with EZL 0085459432 and with the m102.983 ECE EZL (Bosch 0035457832)?
- What's the part number for the correct EZL anlage for the m102.990 KAT (or Rüf) LHD manual

note: I do posses the ECE resistanve knob as wel!

Thank you all!

Hi Belgian,

I will answer just shortly:

As far as I can imagine the 2.3 EZL does not retard the ignition during running warm since the ECE did not have lambda or kat?

- Not true of course it is retarted at ECE too (based on water temperature) to limit engine knocking and damage of full power to cold engine. Also ECE is retarted based on hot intake air in sommer traffic like every other M102 8v or 16v engine.

The m102.990 has longer stroke then the m102.983. This means higher piston travel in m102.990 and thus more advance?

- Not true, M102.990 has longer piston travel but ECE has more advance (advance is greater at engines with higher compression - that is the point!) and thus more power output.

What's the difference between a both EZL modules for these engines?

- Difference for both EZL modules for 2.5 16 M102.990 is that KAT version has some ignition retard to protect Automatic gear box (different ignition map) and also some delay inserted when it detects gear change based on RPM drop to protect Wandler from hydraulic shock. RHD Version are also different to compensate for different shape of the exhaust manifold

It is safe to run my m102.990 KAT with EZL 0085459432 and with the m102.983 ECE EZL (Bosch 0035457832)?

- Yes it is safe, I do the same since 12 years ago.

What's the part number for the correct EZL anlage for the m102.990 KAT (or Rüf) LHD manual

- Correct part number is for Manual gearbox 0065453832 and for Automatic 0065453932 even if those numbers changed in EPC since 20 years. Today if still available it is number beginning with 010 or 011...

Kind regards,
Nikola.
