Hallo,
ChrisMartens- I have a 2.3 16v here that
is 86 build it has ECE 185BHP engine, but
it has a 3.07 ratio but without the diff
output 'thicker' flanges.
ie- its early type flanges and drive shafts.
The 2.3 16v I purchased for spares also
1986, but without the ECE engine also
has a 3.07 ratio diff but it has the thicker
diff output flanges and the halfshafts are
shorter, they are in fact the same length as the
halfshafts required for an ASD 16V Diff,
although ASD was not avilable on '86' 2.3 16v.
Therefore when changing diff flanges you will
need to make sure what you are changing from
and changing to.
The Diff flanges are held in place by
a large Spring clip, so once the outer
seal has been removed then swapping
them is quite straight forward.
The Merc Clutch LSD is quite good, the problem
is that the parts for repair are expensive ,so
some use the 'sticking plaster' spring blocks
which is like using silicon to stop a leaking
water pipe.
Even the LSD on my BMW E30 M3 Track car
wears, but its all about the oil used in
them, are they bedded in correctly in the
first place, and are they set up correctly
with the backlash.
On lock up, I have a AMG LSD diff here at
75% lock up, which has never been used.
I am changing its 5.1 CW/p to 3.69
from a 124 320 CE 24V 5 speed which
also used this ratio CW/p, on its ''185mm'' [sorry about 188, to much BMW]
ABS / ASD Diff .
I believe that AMG altered the Clutch pack
arrangement and the slipper ramp angle,
much as BMW did/does.
I did look into using an E30 LSD on the
16v Project Car, but the problem was finding
suitable halfshafts that would fit the BMW
Diff output flanges and then fit the Merc
hub splines at the wheel.
I researched all the different CV available
but was unable to to find suitable Joints.
I am going to change when its complete to an
E30 LSD with E36 M3 EVO Halfshafts and
then use BMW E46 Hub flanges which
accept the E36 M3 Halfshafts.
Its just thats its much easier and cheaper
to have the E30/36 Clutch LSD rebuilt and
altered if required.
Means altering the diff drive shaft spigot
as Merc is 3/6 onto doughnut, while BMW
is 4 bolt on centering flange.

The Gorilla.
