Forget about that you ever heard about the mercedes way of installing/checking camshafts.
It´s just NOT the way it is done, and it might get you into trouble.
What you need to understand is the inter realation between the two cams.
This inter relation angle is called lobe centerline angle-or LCA.
The stock LCA of the mercedes 102.983 is 109 degrees.
That means that there´s 109 degrees between the highest points on respective lobe when the cams are installed.
This holds true for the 2,3 and the 2,5 both.
What´s more is that the stock cams are installed 3 degrees "aehad".
Ergo sum..the intake cam is installed as LCI(LCI lobe centerline intake) at 106 and the exhaust(lLCE lobe centerline exhaust)at 112 degrees.
It is EXTREMELY important to keep the LCA at the specified setpoint!
While a few degrees in running duration really wont affect much, two simple degrees in LCA will make for a WORLD of difference.
What´s more is that the 102.983 is a so called interference engine, meaning that IF you get the LCA wrong you might VERY well ruin your valves as they will interfere with the pistons.
Forget about that you ever heard about the mercedes way of installing/checking camshafts.
This holds true for the 2,3 and the 2,5 both.

Another thing to have in mind.
As an "amateur"(no offense),running on the ragged edge might be dangerous as far as running on the edge might VERY well kill the engine.
The leaner you run AFR wise...the hotter the "brennraum".
This limit should NOT under any circumstance be advanced without ample measuring equipment(EGTs asf) and what´s more...someone around that knows to interpret the values reached.
Nullpositiv.
Yes.
Being in control of camshaft events will make for a dramatic effect on engine behaviour.
How much...is engine type dependant, and the 16V is relatively pretty picky with this.
It stands to simple reason that as the camchain lives its life it will deteriorate, and over time the camshaft events will most def alter.
This..as you´ve gathered,is a BAD thing.
So..in essence checking and adjusting..yup..it WILL pay big dividents for the engine.
